Revolutionizing Car Parks: K11 Musea's Artistic Approach

K11 Musea Transforms Mundane Car Parks into Vibrant, Artistic Spaces

Victoria Dockside, a new global art and design district in Hong Kong, is home to the K11 Musea Carpark, an innovative project that reimagines the traditionally mundane car park. The design team at K11 Musea has transformed the space into a vibrant, artistic transportation hub, offering a unique experience for visitors.

The inspiration for the K11 Musea Carpark came from the desire to enhance the visitor experience at Victoria Dockside. The design team aimed to break away from the gray monotony of traditional car parks by incorporating unique design elements. Each floor of the car park is identified by a unique color, creating a visual memory of the space. The lighting has been carefully planned to create a sense of harmony across the floors, and the transition from the car park to the shopping mall entrance is marked by Broadway-style light bulbs and metal-framed doors.

The K11 Musea Carpark is part of Victoria Dockside, a three-million-square-foot art and design district on Hong Kong's waterfront. The car park's design reflects the district's innovative and artistic ethos, offering a kaleidoscope of experiences for visitors. The car park is designed to be artistic, unconventional, and human, setting it apart from traditional car parks.

The car park's unique design features are brought to life through a combination of vibrant colors, innovative traffic signs, and contemporary graffiti by leading artist Caratoes. The B2 level of the car park, which connects to the shopping mall entrance, is fitted with grids of light bulbs, metallic ceilings, red brick walls, and checkered floors, reminiscent of a classic Broadway theatre front.

The design team faced several challenges during the project, including space planning and compliance with traffic guidelines. The team worked closely with a traffic consultant to ensure the design elements did not interfere with the flow of traffic. The use of different colors of paint, lighting, and road marks left ample space for circulation. The issue of low ceilings was resolved by leaving the ceiling open and aligning the lights with the direction of traffic to guide the flow of cars.

The K11 Musea Carpark project, which started in 2016 and was completed in August 2019, has been recognized for its innovative design. It was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
